Drupal
Drupal has been a free open source software platform that you can create and build websites on. Since it is web-based, drupal can be used with any operating system.
Drupal is a CMS (Content Management System). A CMS has two essential parts. It has a CMA (Content management application) and a CDA (Content Delivery Application). The CMA allows you to work on your website, adding or removing content moving things around, whatever content you choose to put on your site. The CDA helps to update your site.
The man behind drupal (Dries Buytaert) was a college student in Antwerp looking for an Internet connection. His friend Hans Snijder set up a modem connection between several students. Dries created a news site with a web board so they could communicate with each other through notes. After graduation, they put the site online calling it drop.org
While drop.org began as a notes site, as it grew it became something of a place for sharing ideas and experimentation. In January of 2001 Buytaert released the software behind the site calling it Drupal. The word druppal in Dutch means drop.
The software originally created by Buytaert became the foundation for Drupal as a content management platform for users of all types and levels. Later though Buytaert created a start-up known as Acquia.
